Hundreds of new portraits of Canadians are competing this year for The Kingston Prize, Canada's Portrait Competition. The 434 entries have been sent to the jury, who will select thirty finalists for exhibition, and will later award the Prize of $20,000 and two Honourable Mention awards of $2,000. The exhibition will be shown in Gananoque ON in October, and in Brampton ON starting in November.
Each entry is a contemporary portrait of a Canadian by a Canadian artist, and must be a recent painting or drawing. The portrait is not restricted as to style, but must be based upon a meeting between the artist and the person shown in the portrait.
The event, held every two years, provides a view of Canadians today, as seen through the eyes of visual artists.
The jury for the competition consists of Sara Angel, Founder and Executive Director of the Art Canada Institute, of Toronto; Catharine Mastin, Director of the Windsor Art Gallery; and Glenn Priestley, artist, of Fredericton NB.
