Eva Respini Joins Leadership Team at Vancouver Art Gallery
Eva Respini has been appointed as deputy director and director of curatorial programs at the Vancouver Art Gallery, effective Aug. 1.
The role allows Respini, previously chief curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, to shape the vision of the gallery's curatorial program, alongside CEO Anthony Kiendl, who welcomed her expertise, innovative thinking and global experience.
"Her international outlook as a dual citizen of Norway and Italy, having lived in numerous countries including Croatia, France, Italy and Switzerland, will bring an international scope to the gallery's ambitious plans," he said.
Respini noted the gallery's "boundless potential," particularly with its expected move to a new facility in 2028.
"The gallery’s new building presents an opportunity to create a truly different museum for the 21st century – one that attends to and welcomes the local community, has a global reach and purview, fearlessly foregrounds artists and learning for all and sets the bar for ecological sustainability," she said.
Respini was the curator and co-commissioner of American artist Simone Leigh's presentation at the Venice Biennale and has also organized a mid-career survey of Leigh's work, which opened in Boston in April and will tour the United States.
She has also worked at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, spending more than a decade as a curator in its photography department.
Respini has organized various projects, including Art in the Age of the Internet, 1989 to Today and When Home Won't Let You Stay: Migration through Contemporary Art.
She taught at Harvard University for the last five years and has been a visiting lecturer at Columbia and Yale universities.
The gallery thanked interim chief curator Diana Freundl, who has been promoted to the permanent role of senior curator.
