Cities and towns across Alberta – including Calgary, Canmore, Banff, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Grimshaw – are showcasing photo-based work this month as part of the Exposure Photography Festival.
Contemporary Calgary is showing Exposure’s 2022 International Open Call exhibition and the Emerging Photographers Showcase. Emerging photographers from Calgary, Edmonton, Canmore and Medicine Hat were selected by Hana Kaluznick, assistant curator of photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, for the showcase.
Contemporary Calgary is also exhibiting the work of Alberta-based photographer Dona Schwartz through May 22. Working collaboratively with her subjects, she created Ordinary People (Like Me), which explores social networks and community boundaries.
As well, Exposure has collaborated with Los Angeles-based photo-zine publisher Hamburger Eyes to create an exhibition and photo-zine reading space at Contemporary Calgary that features Alberta zine makers.
Also in Calgary, the work of 31 international and local artists will be displayed on digital billboards throughout the city.
Participating galleries in Calgary include the Esker Foundation, cSPACE, the Herringer Kiss Gallery and the Marion Nicoll Gallery, among many others. In Edmonton, participating galleries include the Harcourt House Artist Run Centre and the Wild Skies Art Gallery. Other partners are the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge and the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery.
