Six national museums, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, are sharing an influx of $53 million over the next two fiscal years, thanks to this week's federal budget.
The funding will also go to the Canadian Museum of History, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Canadian Museum of Science and Technology and the Canadian Museum of Immigration in Halifax.
While the arts, culture, and heritage sector is not a huge player in the federal budget, a handful of other pledges were made in the March 28 budget.
They include:
- $28 million over the next two fiscal years to the National Arts Centre, which has struggled with low ticket sales during the pandemic.
- $40 million over two years to the Canada Media Fund, which fosters the production of Canadian content.
- $10 million over two years for the National Film Board.
- $14 million over two years, starting in the 2024-25 fiscal year, to Ottawa's Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, which supports local festivals and community facilities across the country.
Further details on how the money will be allocated have not been released.
