A jury has selected 15 finalists from among 500 submissions for the 20th annual RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
To mark this milestone, the competition is topping up the $25,000 grand prize with a residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
The finalists are:

- Sarah Davidson – Ottawa
- Angela Fermor – Calgary
- Karine Fréchette – Montreal
- Stephanie Hier – Toronto
- Ally McIntyre - Edmonton
- Emmanuel Osahor – Edmonton
- Lauren Pelc-McArthur – Montreal
- geetha thurairajah – Kitchener–Waterloo
- Kizi Spielmann Rose – Halifax
- Joani Tremblay – Montreal
- Tristan Unrau – Vancouver
- Joy Wong – Toronto
The winner will be announced Sept. 18 at the awards gala at the Power Plant in Toronto.
Two runners up each receive $15,000, and the remaining 12 finalists, $2,500 each.
Paintings by the top three artists are added to RBC's art collection, which includes more than 4,500 Canadian works.
The jury, which focused on bringing forward new perspectives and supporting emerging voices, included:
- Natasha Chaykowski – researcher, writer and curator, Calgary
- Mark Igloliorte – artist & assistant professor, Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver
- Crystal Mowry – senior curator, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Kitchener
- Erin Stump – director, ESP I Erin Stump Projects, Toronto
- Alexandra McIntosh – director of programs and exhibitions, Fogo Island Arts, Fogo Island
- Julie Trudel – artist and assistant professor at Université du Québec à Montréal
- Cynthia Daignault – artist, Brooklyn, N.Y.
The competition is organized with Canadian Art, a national visual arts magazine.
