Full Season of Indigenous Arts Programming at Banff Centre
For the first time in the 85-year history of the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Indigenous Arts will be programmed throughout the calendar year.
It's part of curator Reneltta Arluk’s work to strengthen Indigenous storytelling with programs in dance, storytelling, performance and visual arts.
“I got into the arts as a political act of resurgence,” says Arluk. “My vision is to create a strong Indigenous voice at the community level, the grand national level, and the global level because Indigenous people are a part of all of these spaces. Banff Centre is a place of experimentation and creation, and we want more Indigenous artists to be part of this place.”
Arluk unveiled three highlights:
BodyWeather, which runs from Feb. 4 to Feb. 8, is a comprehensive training and performance practice that explores the mind and the body. It draws from Eastern, Western, and Pacific dance, martial arts and experimental theatre practices.
Indigenous Storytellers and Spoken Word Residency, which runs from March 4 to March 24, features Indigenous storytellers Janet Rogers, Ryan McMahon and Reneltta Arluk as faculty of the Indigenous Storytellers and Spoken Word Residency.
Ghost Days: Making Art for Spirit, which runs from April 22 to May 17, is an experimental art adventure that conjures spirits and ghosts as audience and collaborators.
