Zainub Verjee
Galleries West contributor Dr. Zainub Verjee has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada.
“Dr. Verjee’s appointment to the Order of Canada for advancing representation and equitable policy legislation within Canada’s arts and culture sectors as a leading artist, administrator and critic, is among the 78 new appointments announced today by the Office of the Governor General of Canada,” according to a news release.
Dr. Verjee received the 2020 Governor General Visual and Media Arts Award for Outstanding Contribution. She is a Senior Fellow of Massey College at University of Toronto and a McLaughlin College at York University. She has been awarded honorary doctorates by Simon Fraser University, University of Victoria, NSCAD University (Halifax) and OCAD University (Toronto). The executive director of Galerie Ontario-Ontario Galleries, she contributes to publications around the world, including Galleries West.
Others named as Members of the Order of Canada in December 2023 include visual artist Yisa Folasele Akinbolaji; Art Canada Institute founder and visual arts journalist Sara Angel; Art Gallery of Ontario's first curator of photography Maia-Mari Sutnik; editorial cartoonist and artist Michael de Adder; and artist Deanne M. Fitzpatrick.
Richard Wayne Hill Sr. was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for “his leadership in Indigenous art history and culture, and for his efforts to recover and restore Haudenosaunee artefacts and ways of living.”
The Order of Canada is one of the highest honours that Canada awards. It is in recognition of “an outstanding level of talent and service, or an exceptional contribution to Canada and humanity," according to the Government of Canada.
