Open Space Artist-Run Centre has closed for six months for major renovations designed to increase accessibility.
Updates include an elevator from the ground floor to the gallery, a new stairwell, an open foyer to allow elevator access, an automatic front door, universal washrooms (with gender-neutral stalls) and a seismic shear wall that will improve the building's seismic rating.
“We are excited to upgrade access to our space so that we can better accommodate all members of the Open Space community, including those who utilize assistive devices and mobility aids," said Doug Jarvis, Open Space's executive director in a news release.
Open Space was created in 1972 as a not-for-profit artist-run centre; the founding members bought the building where it is located in the 1970s and a restaurant currently operates on the main floor. Community projects are in the works while the gallery is being renovated and the centre's staff will work off-site during the updates.
