Glenbow Appoints Diverse Board Members
Calgary's Glenbow is appointing five diverse members – Daniel J. Brant, Catherine Odora Hoppers, Leroy Little Bear, Charles Officer and Jean Teillet – to its board.
Board chair Irfhan Rawji says the new members, who come from across Canada and beyond, will expand the board's expertise and help the Glenbow incorporate diverse perspectives.
The new additions, who will be confirmed at the museum's annual general meeting in September, will bring the total of Black, Indigenous and People of Colour up to 10 members. That represents 42 per cent of the board, up from the previous 22 per cent, the museum said.
Brant is a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte in southern Ontario. He is a former CEO of the Assembly of First Nations, a national advocacy organization.
Odora Hoppers is a Ugandan scholar and policy specialist, who focuses on international development, education, disarmament and human security. She is the founder and director of the Global Institute for Applied Governance in Science, Knowledge Systems and Innovations, an international forum for strategic dialogue.
Little Bear is an Elder of the Blood Tribe, Kainai First Nation, in Lethbridge, Alta. A lawyer and educator, he founded the Native American studies program at Harvard University, and is the longtime leader of the Native American studies program at the University of Lethbridge.
Charles Officer is a Jamaican-Canadian writer, director and producer. The founder and creative director of Toronto's Canesugar Mediaworks, Officer is the executive producer and director of The Porter, a dramatic CBC Television series about Black railway workers in the 1920s.
Teillet is a member of the Métis Nation and the great-grandniece of Louis Riel. A Vancouver author and lawyer, she has appeared in landmark Indigenous rights cases before the Supreme Court of Canada.
