Godfre Leung to Join Vancouver's Contemporary Art Gallery
Godfre Leung has been appointed curator at Vancouver's Contemporary Art Gallery.
Leung, a curator, critic and art historian who most recently worked as artistic director at The Bows in Calgary, has produced projects for the Vancouver Art Gallery, Or Gallery, Artspeak and Hotam Press Gallery.
From 2013 to 2015, Leung served on the curatorial team for the landmark Walker Art Center exhibition International Pop, which traveled to the Dallas Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Leung's writing has appeared in publications by the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, along with Art in America, ArtAsiaPacific, C Magazine and Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
Leung holds a PhD in visual and cultural studies from the University of Rochester in New York state. He taught art history for more than a decade, most recently at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where he was an associate professor until 2018.
Matthew Hyland, the gallery's executive director, says Leung brings "an exceptional track record of thoughtful, innovative work with artists and audiences alike."
Leung says he has admired the gallery's programming for years.
“I’m excited to work with CAG’s great team and humbled by the responsibility of helping continue its amazing work in this moment of organizational growth and development," he says.
Leung, who grew up in Vancouver, will start work in late summer.
