The federal government wants to hear what Canadians think about the country's museums.
It is conducting an online survey as part of its work on a new museums policy. The survey is open until June.
Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez announced last May that the government was starting work on a new policy, which has not been updated since 1990.
It will set out aspirations for museums large and small and influence how heritage is protected and how the public can access it. The policy is supported through various federal services, funding programs and legislative measures.
The government says new priorities have emerged since 1990. For instance, the policy does not reflect the current scope of digital transformation, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples or equity, diversity and inclusion issues.
"Responses will help build a federal vision for the museum sector, which will be used to adapt or improve existing federal measures to ensure that our cultural heritage is protected, and that heritage institutions continue to be a place where Canadians can learn for generations to come," it said.
In 2019, almost seven in 10 Canadians visited at least one heritage institution – including museums, historic sites, archives, botanical gardens and zoos, the government says.
