Gregory Burke Resigns at Remai Modern
Gregory Burke, the executive director and CEO of the Remai Modern, has resigned, effective March 15. Burke will return to his home country of New Zealand, where he has been appointed director of the Auckland Art Gallery.
“It’s been an enormous privilege to work with visionary donors, an ambitious and committed board, and the people of Saskatoon to establish Remai Modern,” Burke said. “I have been thrilled by the response from the local community, as well as national and international visitors, artists and collaborators. Saskatoon and Remai Modern will always have a special place in my heart.”
Burke was appointed to head Saskatoon’s Mendel Art Gallery in 2013 and worked tirelessly to open the Remai Modern in October 2017.
Under his leadership, the Remai surpassed its targets, recording more than 450,000 visits and signing up more than 9,000 members in its first year.
According to a recent report by the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority, the total economic impact on GDP from the first year of operations was $21.3 million, which contributed directly or indirectly to the creation of almost 200 full-time equivalent jobs related to tourism.
“The board offers Gregory our heartfelt thanks for his passion and dedication to the monumental project of opening Remai Modern, Canada’s newest modern art museum,” said Scott Verity, chair of the Remai Modern. “We wish Gregory the very best in his new role, and look forward to continuing to build on the solid foundation he has created.”
Burke will remain in Saskatoon over the next three months.
