Montreal-based multidisciplinary artist Hajra Waheed is the winner of the Hnatyshyn Foundation's $25,000 Visual Arts Award, presented for outstanding achievement by a Canadian mid-career artist.
Waheed, a finalist for the 2016 Sobey Art Award, is known for work related to security, surveillance and the legacies of colonial and state violence. Her works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and the National Gallery of Canada, among others.
Michelle Jacques, chief curator at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon, is the winner of the $15,000 Award for Curatorial Excellence in contemporary art.
Jacques moved to the Remai in 2021 after working as chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Three emerging artists – Darcie Bernhardt, an Inuvialuk/Gwichin artist from Tuktuyaaqtuuq, Nunavut; Guná (Megan Jensen), a Tlingit artist from the Carcross/Tagish First Nation; and Jessica Winters, an Inuit artist from Makkovik, Labrador – received the William and Meredith Saunderson Prize for Emerging Artists, worth $5,000 each.
Winners were selected by leading curators from across the country.
