Saskatchewan artist Heather Benning is leaving her job as director of the Art Gallery of Swift Current to become a program consultant with SK Arts, the rebranded Saskatchewan Arts Board. Her departure is effective Sept. 2.

"In my new role, I will continue advocating for under-served communities, rural artists and arts education," Benning wrote in a message to the gallery's arts community.

"Having grown up on a farm in rural Saskatchewan, I personally understand the value of bringing art and art education to rural and remote communities."

She said the Swift Current gallery has expanded its  community engagement through increased programming and a membership drive and has also improved its website, physical premises and organizational governance, including developing a five-year strategic plan. 

Under her leadership, the gallery developed art classes for people at the long-term care facility in Swift Current and then expanded to other facilities in Maple Creek, East End and Shaunavon.
