Heffel Auction House Expands in Calgary
Heffel Calgary North
Heffel, the Vancouver-based national art auction powerhouse, is expanding its national network with a new display and art storage space in Calgary.
The space launches with a preview of Heffel's spring auction, including works by Alex Colville, Jean Paul Riopelle and Doris McCarthy, says the company.
The works will be on display from March 24 to March 26 at the new 4,500-square-foot facility in an industrial park at 220 Manning Road N.E.
The new building includes a gallery and a secure storage facility for fine art. Heffel plans to hold exhibitions, special events and auction previews throughout the year, and will also offer secure storage for collectors, both private and corporate.
The auction preview is free and open to the public.
Previews will then be held in Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto, with the spring auction to follow May 25 as a live broadcast from the company's digital sales room in Toronto.
A highlight of the sale is Colville's painting, June Noon, 1963, which has been consigned from a collection in Germany. It is expected to sell for $1.5 million to $2.5 million.
Other pieces to watch include A.Y. Jackson's Émileville, Que., estimated to fetch $125,000 to $175,000, and Arthur Lismer's An Ontario Village (Meadowvale), estimated at $250,000 to $350,000.
Also on offer is Riopelle's Sans titre, valued at $400,000 to $600,000, and William Kurelek's Cutting the Ice, at $70,000 to $90,000.
Heffel is also mounting a Calgary exhibition of works by Colville, Thinking, Making, Reflecting, from March 25 to April 25, and a group show featuring works by artists in its stable, including Ross Penhall, Barry Ace, David Blackwood and Joe Fafard.
Colville's works can be viewed online here. A digital version of the catalogue is available here.
The new space was developed by Telsec, with Dovetail acting as contractor. Its design was handled by Calgary architect Rick Balbi, with interiors inspired by HB Design.
Heffel is keeping its existing office and gallery in downtown Calgary.
