Henry Heng Lu has been appointed as the new executive director of Vancouver’s Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society.
His first day in the new role will be April 22.
An award-winning curator, arts manager and public art consultant in Vancouver, Lu most recently worked at the Chinese Canadian Museum, where he was the museum’s first gallery manager; he played an important role in the opening in July 2023.
“Henry brings years of cultural and visual arts expertise, especially in the Chinese-Canadian landscape,” said Danny Quon, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society’s board chair, in a news release.
With an extensive background in arts administration and curation, Lu also has considerable experience in non-profit and community-based leadership roles. With roots in Shenzhen, China, he holds a master’s degree in Visual Studies in Curatorial Studies, as well as an Honours BA in Arts Management from the University of Toronto. In addition to English, he speaks Cantonese, Mandarin and Hakka.
“I am honoured to be joining the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden Society and delighted for the opportunity to lead such a culturally significant and unique institution,” Lu said in the news release.
“The garden has held a special place in Vancouver's identity for nearly four decades. It is intended to foster an appreciation of one of China’s great periods of aesthetic and other cultural achievements, connecting with the Chinese Canadian sensibility. I look forward to working with the society’s board and the garden’s team to continue its legacy of promoting cultural exchange, and advocating for the values of inclusivity, diversity and understanding.”
One of Vancouver’s most popular tourist attractions, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is a Ming Dynasty-style garden home and registered museum. One of the first of its kind to be built outside of China, it is also an important venue for cultural programming and special events.
