The Hnatyshyn Foundation – a private charity dedicated to promoting the arts in Canada – has announced the winners of this year's visual arts awards.
The $25,000 award for outstanding achievement by a mid-career artist went to Montreal-based Isabelle Hayeur. Known for photography and experimental videos, Hayeur has shown in exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and many international galleries, including the Today Art Museum in Beijing.
Inuk curator Heather Igloliorte won the $15,000 award for curatorial excellence in contemporary art. Igloliorte is the university research chair in circumpolar Indigenous arts at Concordia University in Montreal, and the president of the board of the Inuit Art Foundation. Recently, she was the lead guest curator of INUA, the inaugural exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Gallery's new Inuit art centre, Qaumajuq.
The $5,000 William and Meredith Saunderson prizes for young artists went to Calgary-based artist and curator Dan Cardinal McCartney, Vancouver-based artist and curator Simranpreet Anand and Toronto-based artist Oreka James.
