A major public art event at Winnipeg's Air Canada Park on Sept. 28 aims to create awareness of Indigenous cultures, peoples and heritage.
New works of public art by local artists Kenneth Lavallee and Julie Nagam, as well as Rolande Souliere and the team of Rebecca Belmore and Osvaldo Yero, will be unveiled.
The artists were asked to consider the significance of Treaty 1 Territory as the birthplace of the Métis nation and the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples.
The project was shaped with input from a gathering of Indigenous artists, elders, knowledge keepers, curators and scholars in 2016.
