Newfoundland artist Glenn Gear is undertaking a residency in Anchorage, Alaska, from Jan. 14 to Jan. 29, courtesy of the Inuit Art Foundation, in partnership with the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center and the Anchorage Museum.
As part of the foundation's circumpolar exchange program, which is supported by the Canada Council, Gear will research the collections of the two institutions.
Gear, an animator, filmmaker and visual artist, produces work that explores his identity as an urban Inuk and his ancestral ties to Nunatsiavut. Now based in Montreal, he creates animated shorts using collage and archival materials. His work has been screened across Canada and around the world.
“I think these sorts of exchanges are important for artists and curators,” says Gear. “It allows us to share our knowledge and helps us to build bridges – sharing different knowledge bases, different traditions, but also celebrating our cultural connections and similarities. And that really excites me.”
