Inuit Art Quarterly – which has covered Inuit and circumpolar Indigenous arts for more than 30 years – has received seven National Magazine Award nominations.
For the second year in a row, Inuit Art Quarterly has been nominated as best art, literary and culture magazine.
“A beautiful and challenging magazine about beautiful and challenging art," the jury said.
Inuit Art Quarterly was nominated alongside C Magazine, the Literary Review of Canada and the Feathertale Review.
Krista Ulujuk Zawadski's article Threading Memories, which traces the evolution of nivingajuliat (wallhangings) in Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), Nunavut, is nominated in the short feature writing category.
Three issues of the magazine – Threads, Relations and Painting – are nominated for best editorial package. Threads focuses on textile arts, Relations on community building and Painting on lesser-known Inuit painters.
The magazine's editor, Britt Gallpen, is nominated for the editor grand prix.
"Gallpen transformed an arts magazine into a bridge between cultures, " the jury said. "Thanks to her efforts, 68 per cent of the writers contributing to Inuit Art Quarterly are Inuit, a major change."
"The result is a publication more vibrant and relevant than ever before."
Publisher Alysa Procida, who has boosted the magazine's readership substantially since taking on the role in 2015, is nominated for the publisher grand prix.
The winners will be announced June 11.
