Jaimie Isaac joins Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as Chief Curator
Jaimie Isaac has been hired as the new chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
“Jaimie's experience working with different communities will lead the AGGV's curatorial and education team in providing a voice reflective of the people of Victoria and Vancouver Island,” says the gallery's acting director Janyce Ronson, who replaced Jon Tupper after his retirement in April.
Isaac is a curator and interdisciplinary artist who has worked as the Indigenous and contemporary curator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery for the past six years. She is a member of Sagkeeng First Nation in Treaty 1 Territory and is of mixed heritage.
“It’s an honour to start working with the AGGV, and the arts community in Victoria, on the traditional unceded territory of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations,” says Isaac.
Isaac curated many exhibitions at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, including the first Winnipeg Indigenous Triennial: Nahdohbii: To Draw Water, an international curatorial collaboration that's on view until February. She also curated Born In Power, a show focusing on Indigenous and Black representation in photography, and Boarder X, which toured nationally and won an outstanding achievement award from the Canadian Museums Association.
As an artist, Isaac is a co-founder of The Ephemerals collective, which was on the long list for the Sobey Art Award in 2017 and 2019. Her writing has been published in Art + Wonder, C Magazine and Border Crossings. She was a CBC Manitoba Future 40 finalist in 2020.
Isaac follows Michelle Jacques, who previously held the position and is now chief curator at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon.
