Jennifer Kostuik received an investment of $6000 from her grandmother to create the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery in a 300 square foot ground floor apartment inside the court yard off of 6th Avenue and Granville Street in Vancouver, February 1996. After receiving a BA Honors in Art History Queens University in Canada, Jennifer relocated from the USA to Vancouver BC to begin her career as a contemporary art gallerist.
Malcolm Parry, the city's preeminent Columnist and art enthusiast for the Vancouver Sun Newspaper and Vancouver Magazine first reviewed the gallery and thought that showing art work in the bathroom (a new condo development which included an old fashioned claw foot tub) was clever as he had never seen such frugal use of real estate…and a wonderful friendship occurred.
In June 2000, Jennifer Kostuik Gallery moved to South Granville a.k.a "Gallery Row", beginning a 5 year lease with only one artist; Vancouver painter Tina Cullen. After two months of flying across the country to Calgary, Saskatoon, and Toronto, and meeting artist's that approached Jennifer in person, the core base of the gallery's artists were born: Atlanta, Georgia based Laura Bell; Miami, Florida based William Betts; Calgary, Alberta based Dianne Bos; Vancouver based David Burdeny; Calgary, Alberta based Curtis Cutshaw; Los Angeles, California based Colleen Flynn Lawson; Vancouver Island based Steven Goring; Ottawa, Ontario based Stephen Hutchings; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based Marianne Lovink; London, Ontario based Stu Oxley; Lethbridge, Alberta based Bill McCarroll; Toronto, Ontario based Sasha Rogers and Ottawa, Ontario based Jennifer Stead.
The Jennifer Kostuik Gallery has gone through two more expansions; further down Granville Street in 2005 and then to Yaletown, the warehouse district of downtown Vancouver, in 2007 where it's present location remains.
Jennifer has fond memories of artists in and out of the gallery's roster, including James Lahey, Bill Marshall, Joe Fleming, Aaron Hill, Marie Lannoo, Kevin O'Connell, Edith Stipl, Alan Storey, Reece Terris and Douglas Walker. The gallery roster has expanded to include an international group of artists: Massachusetts, USA based Sand T Kalloch; Providence, Rhode Island based Jane Masters; Japan based Kumiko Fujinami; Portland, Oregon based Jim Kazanjian; Belgium based Catherine Nelson; Mexico City based Patrick Pettersson; Vancouver/The Netherlands based Arno Kortchot; and San Diego, California based Matt Devine.
