Police are treating the death of multimedia artist Jeremy Gordaneer in Victoria as a homicide.
They were called to the city's Rockland neighbourhood on Aug. 31 after neighbours heard popping sounds and found a badly injured man, who died at the scene.
The victim has been identified by friends and family as Gordaneer, 49, a father of two who lived in Edmonton. He was a painter, sculptor and scenic designer.
"He touched so many people with his talent – his gentle genius – his wry sense of humour," hie wife, Thea Patterson posted on Facebook. "He was – he is – simply one of the very best ones."
Gordaneer, who recently completed his Master's degree in theatre design at the University of Alberta, grew up in Victoria and was the son of the late visual artist James Gordaneer, an abstract painter.
Patterson told CBC News her husband had travelled to Victoria to help his mother, who recently had eye surgery. No arrest has been made.
