Ken Lum has won this year's $50,000 Scotiabank Photography Award.
Lum, a longtime Vancouver artist now living in Philadelphia, also receives a solo exhibition during next year's Contact Photography Festival and a book deal with German arts publisher Steidl.
The award, co-founded by Scotiabank and Toronto photographer Edward Burtynsky, recognizes the achievements of established mid-to-late career artists.
Burtynsky, who chaired the jury, said Lum has been "prescient in creating artworks that examine the complex relationships between text and image."
Two finalists, Sandra Brewster and Chris Currieri, both based in Toronto, each receive $10,000.
Lum, who teaches at the University of Pennsylvania, has created public art installations and exhibited widely, including at Documenta 11 and biennials in São Paulo, Shanghai, Istanbul and elsewhere. He has published many essays on art and co-founded the Yishu Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art.
This year's jury included Stéphane Aquin, director, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; Dr. Kenneth Montague, an art collector and curator; and Gaëlle Morel, exhibition curator at the Toronto Image Centre.
A solo exhibition by last year's winner, Jin-me Yoon, is on view at the Toronto Image Centre until Aug. 5.
