Kent Monkman's exhibition, Beauty and the Beasts / La Belle et la Bête, is inspired by the collections of the Musée des Confluences in Lyon and is curated by Catherine Bédard.
The show coincides with the reopening of the Canadian Embassy in its new location and launches the programming of the Canadian Cultural Centre, now located in the embassy compound at 130 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the 8th arrondissement of Paris.
The exhibition, which runs from May 17 to Sept. 5, is the result of an encounter between Monkman, an Indigenous artist of Cree origin, born in Manitoba and based in Toronto, and the Musée des Confluences in Lyon.
The artist selected 10 pieces from the museum's collection that are representative of objects and animals now dispossessed of the powers that Indigenous cultures attributed to them. He makes them the heart of an exhibition that examines the relationship between animals and humans, inviting viewers to think about the concept of cultural appropriation.
