Kimberly Phillips appointed Curator at Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver
After four years, Phillips will leave her position as Director/Curator at Access Gallery in Vancouver where, under her leadership, the artist-run centre has undergone substantial transformation in terms of its space, capacity and programming, further asserting its pivotal role within the city. She will assume her new role at CAG in August 2017.
Phillips’ programming, involving provocative ideas and critical conversations in contemporary art, brought greater visibility and critical reception to emergent artists alongside increasing the organisation’s international reach and impact. She shares in CAG’s vision to present dynamic and diverse programs that contribute to discourse present in Vancouver and beyond, while collaborating with other organisations locally to internationally and reaching out to the broadest of constituencies.
Previously Head of Interpretation at Vancouver Art Gallery, Phillips is a well-respected curator, writer and educator, and holds a doctorate in art history from the University of British Columbia. Alongside her curatorial work she has maintained an active teaching practice in both undergraduate and graduate levels at the University of British Columbia and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, with her writing for numerous exhibition catalogues and critical anthologies sited at the convergence of discourses on the politics of memory, identity and artistic interventions in urban space.
