Atleigh Homma is the 2019 winner of the $20,000 Kingston Prize for Canadian portraiture.
She was honoured for her acrylic painting, I like the idea of romantic thoughts, but I'm just not that poetic of a person. It shows a young woman in a plaid shirt leafing through a a book titled Art & Love: The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Two honourable mention awards of $2,000 each were also announced: Elaine Despins, for Inward Gaze, and Leslie Watts, for Emily in Two T-Shirts.
An exhibition at the Firehall Theatre of the Thousand Islands Playhouse in Gananoque, Ont., was on view from Oct. 11 to Oct. 27.
Meanwhile, the Globe and Mail reports that Syrian artist Houssam Alloum was one of 30 artists shortlisted for the prize, just a year after he arrived in Canada. Alloum previously worked as an art director at a television station in Turkey.
His painting won the People's Choice selelction. If depicts Joyce McLaughlin, an 85-year-old Gananoque resident who has helped Alloum and his family settle into their new life.
