Kristy Trinier to Curator's Post at SFU Galleries
SFU Galleries has hired Kristy Trinier as its curator.
Trinier, formerly the director of the Art Gallery of Southern Alberta in Lethbridge, and, before that, curator at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, starts March 14.
“Kristy brings extensive experience realizing rigorous and inventive projects in complex and dynamic sites, including in unconventional learning contexts, collections and the public realm,” says director Kimberly Phillips. “Her process is centred on listening to, and building relationships with, the artists and communities with whom she works. Her strengths and ethic align her very meaningfully with SFU Galleries’ vision and our work to come, and we are thrilled to welcome her to our team.”
SFU Galleries’ previous curator, cheyanne turions, who was mired in controversy after publicly acknowledging she was unable to substantiate her claims of Indigenous identity, resigned in November.
Trinier, born in Edmonton, has also worked as the public art director at the Edmonton Arts Council, and as the director of visual, digital and media arts at the Banff Centre for the Arts.
She served as a core member and secretary with the Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective in Edmonton as a settler supporter from 2015 to 2020, and currently acts as an advisory circle member.
She is a co-producer of Publication Studio, a print-on-demand artist book publishing project and has volunteered for many non-profit art groups, served on art committees and juries, including the 2018 Sobey Art Award, and has written for art magazines, including MOMUS and Canadian Art.
She has a Bachelor’s degree in visual art and English from the University of Victoria, and a Master’s degree in public art from the Dutch Art Institute. She is currently completing PhD studies in philosophy, art, and critical thought at the European Graduate School in Switzerland. As an artist, she has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Alberta, the Trondheim Kunstmuseum in Norway, and Kunsthalle Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, among others.
SFU Galleries comprises SFU Gallery at the Burnaby, B.C., campus, as well as the Audain and Teck galleries in central Vancouver.
