Dene and Niitsitapi artist Lauren Crazybull has won this year’s $10,000 Eldon and Anne Foote Edmonton Visual Arts Prize.
The honour came for a portrait of her friend Elijah Cardinal-Whitford, part of Crazybull’s solo show of portraits of Indigenous people at Edmonton's McMullen Gallery.
Two runners up, Marilene Oliver and Kyle Terrence, each received $1,000.
Crazybull, recently awarded a $10,000 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta 2020 Emerging Artist prize, was appointed last year as Alberta's first provincial artist in residence.
The Foote prize was established through the Edmonton Community Foundation in partnership with the Edmonton Arts Council, the Visual Arts Alberta Association and CARFAC Alberta.
Previous winners include Arlene Wasylynchuk, Paul Freeman, Brenda Draney, Julian Forrest, Gary James Joynes, Sean Caulfield, Gillian Willans and aAron Munson.
