Legislation proposed by Senator Patricia Bovey to recognize the critical role of artists in Canada has failed to gain a sponsor in the House of Commons, the Canadian Press reported Monday.
The bill, passed by the Senate in October, was originally supposed to be sponsored by Liberal MP Jim Carr, who died in December.
No MP had been found to replace Carr when the legislation came up for debate Monday in the Commons. Without a sponsor, it could not be debated.
The bill was intended as a starting point for federal policies to support the creative sector, where many workers live below the poverty line.
Bovey, who retires from the Senate on May 15, held public consultations with hundreds of people before tabling her bill in the Senate.
