The Philip B. Lind Emerging Artist Prize, an annual award for British Columbia artists, has announced 11 finalists for its 2020 competition.
They are Rebecca Bair, Preston Buffalo, Lacie Burning, Rydel Cerezo, Krystle Coughlin, Jorden Blue Doody, Laura Gildner, Rina Lyshaug, Adiba Muzaffar, Xan Shian and Svava Tergesen.
An exhibition of their work will be presented at the Polygon Gallery from Feb. 7 to March 1. The winner, to be announced Feb. 12, will receive a $5,000 commission for work to be shown at the Polygon in 2021.
In past years, nominations were limited to students enrolled in a BFA or MFA program working in film, photography or video. In 2019, the program expanded to include emerging artists working outside academic institutions.
Curators and visual arts instructors nominated more than 60 candidates. Finalists were chosen by a jury composed of Vancouver art critic Robin Laurence; Kegan McFadden, executive director of the Victoria Arts Council; and Pablo de Ocampo, curator at the Western Front in Vancouver.
The prize, established in 2016, is supported by Rogers Communications in honour of Phil Lind, right-hand man to the late Ted Rogers, the company's former CEO.
