This year's Lind Prize – awarded annually to an emerging British Columbia artist working in film, photography or video – goes to Simranpreet Anand.
The $10,000 prize includes an opportunity to collaborate on a project with North Vancouver's Polygon Gallery.
Anand, who is based in Surrey, B.C., and Ann Arbor, Michigan, wins for a selection of works, including a series of woven dhurrie rugs, insatiable desires of a bourgeoisie, and a 16-minute film, mukti maal kanik laal heera man ranjan kee maaiaa.
She holds a BFA in visual arts along with a second major in psychology from the University of British Columbia.
The runners-up are UBC Okanagan graduate Aaron Leon and Simon Fraser University graduate Katayoon Yousefbigloo, who each receive $4,000.
Four finalists – Wei Chen, Sidney Gordon, Natasha Katedralis and Jake Kimble – each receive $2,500.
The jury consisted of Emmy Lee Wall, executive director of the Capture Photography Festival; Richard Hill, a senior curator at the Vancouver Art Gallery; and Samuel Roy-Bois, a professor at UBC Okanagan.
The jurors said Anand's work demonstrates ways in which everyday objects carry cultural weight, as well as histories of global capitalism.
"Her ability to translate these urgent narratives into visually sumptuous, materially inventive works adds to their power," they noted.
Previous winners of the Lind Prize include Charlotte Zhang, Laura Gildner, Jessica Johnson and Christopher Lacroix.
