Vancouver artist Liz Magor and Stan Douglas are the latest Canadian recipients of the prestigious French Order of Arts and Letters medal.
The medal, awarded by the French consul general in Vancouver, recognizes contributions to contemporary art with connections to France.
Magor has exhibited frequently in France during her career, and is represented by the Marcelle Alix gallery in Paris. In 2018, the Musée d’Art Moderne et d’Art Contemporain in Nice held a retrospective of her work, showcasing more than 40 pieces created between 1989 and 2017.
Douglas has shown his work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Lyon Bienniale, as well as many other venues.
"His nomination honours not only his unique and independent approach to photography and video, but also the way his work explores our contemporary societies," the consulate general said on its website.
Since 1957, France has awarded the Order of Arts and Letters to artists, writers and others who have contributed to furthering the arts in France and throughout the world.
Other Vancouver artists who have received the medal include Ian Wallace and Douglas Coupland.
