Long List Announced for Sobey Art Award
The Sobey Art Award's long list is out and, for the first time, artists over 40 are on the list.
The age limit was removed earlier this year to make the prestigious award more inclusive.
Each of the five regional categories includes at least one person aged 41 to 58.
The 25 artists on the long list will receive $10,000 each, an increase from the $2,000 awarded in previous years.
This year saw an unprecedented number of first-time long-listed artists, says Rob Sobey, chair of the Sobey Art Foundation.
“I am pleased to see such an exciting array of emerging artists.”
Sasha Suda, jury chair and director of the National Gallery of Canada, noted there was a record number of nominations, many “from outside of the large urban centres that we often associate with the art world.”
The four regional winners on the short list will receive $25,000 each, while the winner will take home $100,000.
