Long List for Sobey Art Award Announced
The 25 artists on the long list vying for the $100,000 top prize at the 2023 Sobey Art Award were announced Tuesday by the National Gallery of Canada
The jury selected five artists from each of the country's five regions for the prize, which is funded by the Sobey Art Foundation.
The West Coast and Yukon finalists are Justine A. Chambers, Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill, Woojae Kim, Christine Howard Sandoval and Douglas Watt.
The finalists for the Prairies and North are Keeley Haftner, Kablusiak, Wally Dion, Marigold Santos and Catherine Blackburn.
From Ontario, the finalists are Alvin Luong, Barry Ace, Michèle Pearson Clarke, Pejvak (Felix Kalmenson and Rouzbeh Akhbari) and Rah Eleh.
The Quebec finalists are Anahita Norouzi, Geneviève and Matthieu, Laura Acosta and Santiago Tavera, arkadi lavoie lachapelle, and Renée Condo.
The finalists for the Atlantic are Miranda Bellamy and Amanda Fauteux, Séamus Gallagher, Will Gill, Alan Syliboy, and Aislinn Thomas.
The short list of five artists will be announced June 7 and the winner will be named Nov, 18.
An exhibition featuring the five artists on the short list will run from Oct. 13 to March 3 at the National Gallery, which has organized the prize since 2016.
Jonathan Shaughnessy, the Ottawa gallery's director of curatorial initiatives and chair of the six-person jury said the finalists present "a wide range of media, perspectives and lived experiences that reveal new ways of seeing ourselves, each other and our diverse histories."
Each artist on the long list takes home at least $10,000. The short list artists – one from each region – are guaranteed $25,000. A total of $400,000 – including the top prize of $100,000 – will be awarded.
The award, created in 2002, is open to Canadian contemporary artists of all ages. It has been given to leading artists such as Brian Jungen, Annie Pootoogook and Kapwani Kiwanga. Last year's winner was Divya Mehra.
The Sobey Art Foundation was established in 1981 to carry on the work of the late Frank H. Sobey, a businessman and avid collector of Canadian art.
