Art Sensitive to Hospital Environment: Hospital Artist in Residence program gives local artist inside look into the world of organ transplant recipients.
McMullen Gallery presents Retreat, an exhibition of interactive sculptures and drawings from Friends of University Hospitals’ first Artist in Residence Bradley Necyk. Running until May 1, Retreat marks the end of Necyk’s residency, and is the result of a perspective-changing look into the intense world of transplant medicine.

Necyk’s time working in the University of Alberta’s transplant department pushed him as an artist to be sensitive to patient experience, with much of the work included in Retreat focusing directly on them and their stories. Two stilted room sculptures play with scale and use familiar items to give viewers the feeling of secluded and safe space – an idea based off of the real life refuge of a heart transplant recipient. The “rooms” also feature Necyk’s drawings and patient poetry. The gallery space is rounded out with sketches the artist has done of transplant patients, light boxes, and patient photography.
Bradley Necyk (MFA University of Alberta, MSc Psychiatry Candidate University of Alberta) has been shown internationally, was an artist in the 2015 Alberta Biennial, delivers academic papers internationally, is a Scholar in the Integrative Health Institute at the University of Alberta, and teaches senior level courses in Drawing and Intermedia at the University of Alberta.
Retreat runs until May 1, 2016. There will be a closing reception and artist talk May 1 2-4PM.
Necyk’s short film Alberta will be presented with a panel of speakers April 19, 7:00-9pm at Metro Cinema. (friendsofuah.org/alberta)
