Interdisciplinary artist Meagan Musseau has been awarded this year's Emerging Atlantic Canada Artist Residency at the Banff Centre.
During the eight-week residency, Musseau will benefit from technical expertise, mentorship, studio visits and opportunities to engage with other artists, followed by a public speaking tour across Canada.
Musseau is of Mi'kmaq and French ancestry from the community of Curling in the Bay of Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador – Elamstukwek, Ktaqmkuk territory of Mi'kma'ki.
She works with customary art practices and new media, including beadwork, basketry, installation and land-based action, exploring notions of memory, language and the relationship between land and body as we'll as object and narrative.
Musseau graduated with a BFA in visual art from the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University. Her work has shown nationally and abroad, in venues such as the Open Space artist-run centre in Victoria, the University of Saskatchewan's Gallery Two in Saskatoon, Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John's, Nfld., and the University of Brighton Gallery in Britain.
She has participated in artist residencies at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Centre for Book and Paper Arts at Columbia College in Chicago, and the National Artist Program of the 2011 Canada Games in Halifax.
Valued at $30,000, the Emerging Atlantic Artist Residency is awarded under an agreement between the Banff Centre, the Hnatyshyn Foundation and the Harrison McCain Foundation.
