Michael Gibson Gallery Celebrates 40th Anniversary
One of Eastern Canada's foremost independent galleries — and friend to many artists from Western Canada — is celebrating a major milestone this month.
Michael Gibson Gallery, in London, Ont. will mark its 40th year in business on Nov. 14. The gallery team is throwing a party to celebrate on Nov. 16, from 2 to 4 pm.
“Michael was 26 years old in 1984 when he bought Roth Art on Talbot Street in downtown London. Thirteen years later, he sat across the street from the ‘Entrepreneurs Wanted’ sign in the window of 157 Carling and visualized the transformation of the building into what we now know as Michael Gibson Gallery,” according to the gallery team.
“To honour Michael’s 40 long years in the art business, he has curated an exhibition from his collection, paying tribute to some of the artists who he has had the privilege of knowing and representing over the past four decades.”
The gallery's group exhibition, A Collector's Survey, is on now through Nov. 30 and includes artists Aganetha Dyck, Adam David Brown, Eyes As Big As Plates, Murray Favro, Fred Herzog, Harold Klunder, Wanda Koop, Greg Curnoe, Paterson Ewen, Lynn Richardson and others.
“Somehow I have remained calm enough to enjoy my journey into the art business for now 40 years,” Gibson wrote in his most recent newsletter.
“In small business terms, it's a long time to meet rent and payroll. I've been so blessed with five different landlords (the last one sold me the building in 2005) and the many employees who tried their best to help me along in my dream with no end. Along the way I've built many life-long relationships and have had a lot of silly fun. I've never been a proponent of acting my age, especially now at 66.”
