Michelle Jacques Appointed Remai Modern Chief Curator
Michelle Jacques, a curator with more than 20 years’ experience at major Canadian public galleries, will be the next chief curator at the Remai Modern in Saskatoon.
Jacques, who has been chief curator at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria since 2012 and previously worked at the Art Gallery of Ontario, will take up her new post in February.
Aileen Burns and Johan Lundh, the Remai's co-executive director, cite Jacques' experience with modern and contemporary art, especially in collection development and reinterpretation.
“She also brings a wealth of experience in working in and with diverse communities, an increasing focus as we move into Remai Modern’s next chapter,” they say.
Jacques will direct the Remai’s exhibitions team, leading work in collections, conservation, exhibitions, research and publications.
“The team, the collection, the building and the community seem so full of energy and potential, and the opportunity to find the magic at the nexus of these components is what I love most about working in museums,” Jacques says.
Jacques, born in Toronto to parents of Caribbean origin, was raised on Dish With One Spoon Territory and began working in art museums after completing graduate work at York University.
Jacques has also taught courses in writing, art history and curatorial studies at NSCAD University in Halifax, the University of Toronto Mississauga and OCAD University in Toronto.
In 2019, she was appointed as the inaugural vice-president, inclusion and outreach, of the Association of Art Museum Curators, a New York-based group that supports and promotes curatorial work around the world.
