This summer, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is taking art on the road to communities across Manitoba.
Tour 150 is a mobile art initiative that will travel the province in a converted van. The project was launched in partnership with Manitoba 150, a non-profit organization that is facilitating celebrations of the province's 150th anniversary this year.
The exhibition on display is Nakatamaakewin: Bringing art to you! It features art from the four regions of Nunangat, the Inuit homeland in Canada. It also honours the opening of Qaumajuq, the new Inuit art centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
Nakatamaakewin is a Michif word gifted by language keeper and elder Verna Demontigny. It means “to leave something behind.”
The van features a polar bear on one side and a reindeer on the other, both created by Inuk artist Kailey Sheppard. Inside, the van is set up like a miniature art gallery, with display cases and wall space for soapstone, felt, print and textile art.
The mobile exhibition will travel to communities across the province from July to September with an art educator. Find the full schedule here.
