Montreal Museum Cited in New International Guide
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been recognized as a pioneer by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development and the International Council of Museums in their new guide.
Launched in Venice last December, the guide is intended for governments, communities and museums striving to promote local development and a sustainable future.
Nathalie Bondil, the museum's executive director, said the recognition is a milestone for the museum's vision of its role in social progress.
"The exceptional validation by these international economic and cultural institutions enables us to advance our message to strengthen the role of culture and expand the definition of a trailblazing museum in the areas of inclusion and well-being," she said.
Several recent studies on culture, heritage and local development commissioned by the OECD provided the basis for the guide.
The museum, the only Canadian institution cited in the guide, is featured in five of 16 case studies. Projects that drew attention include the museum's support for the Pride festival, its program for high school teachers, and its art therapy workshops for people affected by violence.
