The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been closed since March 14, but its digital offerings are attracting a growing audience.
"Striving to make art and its varied programs accessible to as many people as possible, the museum's teams have rolled up their sleeves to offer their audiences virtual content that is equally creative and educational," the gallery says. "These efforts have met with unqualified success: the numbers of visitors on the MMFA's distribution platforms have grown exponentially."
The museum cites a 96 per cent increase in Facebook followers over the last month, and says its mobile app, which provides virtual tours and audioguides, saw downloads soar by 230 per cent on App Store and 3,000 per cent on Google Play.
The museum's popular virtual offerings also include weekly videos that show museum experts answering questions from the public and EducArt, was saw the website that hosts the educational platform crash on the first day. Adjustments have since been made, enabling 16,800 users – almost 90 per cent of whom are new – to use the tool's scholastic resources, the gallery says. In less than a month, EducArt has seen a 97 per cent rise in visitors.
