More Funding for Montreal's Contemporary Art Museum
The federal and Quebec governments have announced more infrastructure funding – some $56 million – to support the expansion of Montreal's Musée d'art contemporain.
"This project will provide residents, visitors and artists with a more accessible cultural infrastructure, which will help preserve and promote local and international modern art," the announcement said.
The expansion project includes improvements to visitor services and enhanced protection for the museum's collection, as well as reorganized interior spaces and modernization.
Ottawa will contribute an additional $31 million, while Quebec is topping up its donation with $25 million.
In total, Ottawa is investing $50 million, while Quebec is investing $55 million. The museum will contribute more than $11 million.
Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez described the move as "a concrete investment in the dynamism of our society."
"Helping the Musée d'art contemporain double its exhibition space means twice as much room to celebrate art and culture, especially our own," Rodriguez said.
John Zeppetelli, director of the museum, located in a cultural hub in central Montreal, welcomed the funding.
"We're delighted to be moving into the next phase of execution, which will bring us closer to the inauguration we've all been longing for," he said.
