Museum of North Vancouver Opens in December
After 20 years of planning, the Museum of North Vancouver will open its doors on Dec. 4. Admission will be free on opening day.
“The past year has been challenging for many of us and with this project we’re excited to be a part of North Vancouver’s pandemic recovery,” said museum commission chair Dee Dhaliwal.
“A community vision decades in the making has finally become reality, the result of many years of advocacy and persistent belief in the potential and the necessity of this space.”
The institution was able to raise $1.5 million from individuals, businesses and foundations, along with $6.1 million from all three levels of government.
Located in the Shipyards district of North Vancouver, the new museum is close to Lonsdale Quay, the Polygon Gallery and the SeaBus Terminal. Permanent displays include the restored electric Streetcar 153, a new cedar carving of Sch’ich’iyuy (The Two Sisters) by Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) carver Wade Baker, and an Indigenous welcome circle showcasing Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations stories and belongings.
The permanent gallery also includes a history of North Vancouver’s waterfront. A feature exhibition gallery will open in early 2022.
The museum will be open from Thursday to Sunday during the winter. Find more information here.
