Nancy Noble to Head Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
Nancy Noble has been appointed as director of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Noble, who will start it early June, brings 30 years of experience in the Canadian art and museum sector, said Chris Lawless, the president of the gallery's board.
“Nancy has extensive experience in the management of art galleries and other cultural institutions and a proven ability to lead change," he said.
Noble spent six years as director of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, where she led an international design competition to hire an architectural team for a new gallery on the Halifax waterfront. Under her leadership, the gallery raised $110 million toward the building's $140-million capital campaign.
From 2005 to 2016, Noble worked as CEO of the Museum of Vancouver, where she oversaw governance changes, staff reorganization and new planning processes. During her tenure, a collaborative exhibition with the UBC Museum of Anthropology and the Musqueam Cultural Centre, Casnaem, The City Before the City, won the Governor General's history award for excellence in museums.
Noble said she looks forward to building on the gallery's existing strengths while working with the community "to ensure we meet the diversity of perspectives and provide a place for all.”
Janyce Ronson has served as acting director over the last year, after longtime director Jon Tupper retired.
