The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG)-Qaumajuq has announced a new artist-in-residence program.
The first four-week independent residency started Jan. 19 and will continue through Feb. 16.
Aghalingiak Okokannoak, Dayle Kubliuitok and Eva Qirniq Noah, the first three artists, were selected by WAG-Qaumajuq, the Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
The program's goal is to let artists experiment and develop their practice without needing to present a finished body of new work at the end, said the gallery team in a news release.
“Having fresh perspectives and artists’ energy in the building and seeing what they will create and how they will use these resources is something I and the rest of the staff here are looking forward to,” said Stephen Borys, the gallery's director and CEO.
“A big part of why we built Qaumajuq was to help bring Inuit art and artists to the forefront, and I can’t think of a better opportunity.”
