New CEO appointed at Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art

The Bill Reid Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Alexandra Montgomery as CEO of the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, effective October 1, 2014. Ms. Montgomery succeeds Mr. Michael Robinson, who has led the gallery since January 2009.

“We are delighted Ms. Montgomery, a seasoned, well-rounded Canadian arts leader has joined the Bill Reid Gallery. Her energy, professionalism and focus will drive the BRG to new levels of community engagement. The Boards of the Bill Reid Foundation (BRF) and Bill Reid Trust (BRT) wish to express their gratitude to Mr. Robinson for his leadership which established the new gallery as a vibrant cultural presence in Vancouver,” said David Gillanders, chair of the BRF and Scott Hean, chair of the BRT. We are also grateful to Mr. Robinson for agreeing to continue as President of the BRF to ensure a seamless leadership transition.

Ms. Montgomery previously led the Gardiner Museum, Canada’s national ceramics museum located in Toronto. During her 14- year tenure, she oversaw the award winning expansion of the Gardiner, which created the facilities necessary to expand public programming, and diversify both audience and revenues. She has also played a key role in the senior management teams at the Canadian Opera Company, the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, and Tides Canada. Ms. Montgomery has a BA (Hons.) in Art History (Queen’s University, Kingston), and an MBA from the Schulich School of Business (York University, Toronto).

“I am excited to have the opportunity to build on the success of the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art by working with the Board and staff to celebrate both Bill Reid’s international legacy as a great Canadian artist and to promote extraordinary contemporary Northwest Coast art and artists. I look forward to working collaboratively to create exhibitions and programs that engage the community, excite the public, and add to the discourse of contemporary art in Vancouver,” said Ms. Montgomery.

The Bill Reid Gallery opened its doors to the public in May 2008, and promotes knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of contemporary Aboriginal art of the Northwest Coast. The Gallery is home to the Simon Fraser University Bill Reid Collection. Twenty thousand visitors are expected in 2014. The Bill Reid Foundation was established as a charity in 1999 to preserve the art and promote the legacies of Bill Reid in the public realm.
