New Director at Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society
Emily Angulalik has been appointed the new executive director of the Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq / Kitikmeot Heritage Society in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. The society is dedicated to the preservation and revival of Inuit culture, language and history.
“When we all work together and move forward, we can achieve our goals,” says Angulalik, one of the founders of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society in 1996. She has held many board and staff positions at the organization, including executive director from 2005 to 2007, and most recently was manager of Inuinnaqtun language revitalization. Angulalik also worked as an Inuinnaqtun instructor at Nunavut Arctic College for eight years.
Angulalik received the 2021 Indspire Award for Culture, Heritage and Spirituality. Her appointment comes at a critical time for the organization as there are fewer than 600 Inuinnaqtun speakers left.
