New Director at Southern Alberta Art Gallery
Su Ying Strang has been appointed as executive director of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge.
“I am honoured and delighted to join both the thoughtful, dedicated team at the gallery and the remarkable local arts community,” says Strang, chosen after a national search.
“The organization is heading into a critical stage of development with many compelling projects on the horizon, and I’m looking forward to contributing to this essential institution and connecting with the community.”
Strang is an artist and cultural worker who has spent the last nine years at The New Gallery in Calgary, most recently as its director.
“Su Ying Strang’s clear vision of community engagement through contemporary art practices has been a guiding light for The New Gallery during her time with us,” says The New Gallery's board president Noel Heard.
Strang serves on the board of the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, where she chairs the governance committee and co-chairs the anti-racism and equity committee. In 2020, she represented Canada at the Salzburg Global Forum for Young Cultural Innovators. Strang was also one of Avenue magazine’s Top 40 Under 40 in 2018.
She has a BFA from what is now the Alberta University of the Arts and has completed the Banff Centre’s cultural leadership program and the Rozsa arts management program.
As director of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Strang will be responsible for guiding a $5.78 million renovation project, which enters the planning and design phase in January. She will transition into the director's chair with a full-time start date of Jan. 3.
