New Executive Director at the Campbell River Art Gallery
The Campbell River Art Gallery announces that Vicky Chainey Gagnon has been appointed Executive Director.
Ms. Chainey Gagnon has been active in the field for 15 years as a curator of contemporary art and as an arts administrator. Most recently, as Director/Chief Curator at The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, she curated the work of Canadian and international artists, including Kym Greeley, Marlene MacCallum, Olivia Boudreau, Regina Silveira, Jennie Williams, April White, Catherine Bolduc and Myriam Yates, among others. At The Rooms, she supported the production of SakKijâjuk: Art and Craft from Nunatsiavut, a ground breaking exhibition that included a trilingual publication, the first major book on the art of the Labrador Inuit.
In 2014, Ms.Chainey Gagnon curated Manif d’art 7 - the Quebec City Biennial on the theme of Resistance: And Then, We Built New Forms. A large-scale project presenting the work of 36 Canadian and international artists across museums, artist-run-centers and public spaces, the exhibition spaces and city at large were activated for the duration of the month-long event with extensive workshops, lectures, film screenings and performances. Prior to that, Ms. Chainey Gagnon was the long-time Director/Curator of the Foreman Art Gallery of Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec where she was recognized for her innovative approach and interest in emerging artistic practices.
“That we were able to attract a talent of Ms.Chainey Gagnon’s calibre speaks volumes to the work the Gallery has been doing over the last few years,” said Lucas Schuller, chair of the Campbell River Art Gallery board. “We’re excited to see where she’ll take us from here.”
Effective July 1st, Ms. Chainey Gagnon succeeds Kris Anderson, who served as Executive Director since 2013.
“We want to thank Kris for her leadership and commitment to this community over the last four years,” said Schuller.
Speaking about her appointment, Ms.Chainey Gagnon said, “It is with abundant joy that I look forward to working with the communities of Campbell River to generate curiosity and engagement with the contemporary visual arts and to plant the seeds of great things, together.”
